Stalin’s great purge (1936 to 1938) took a punishing toll on the professional officers of the Red Army. Many talented, but outspoken, officers were dragged off to the gulags of Siberia for re-education, or in other cases simply shot as enemies of the state. This resulted in a state of perpetual fear among those remaining military officers.

Strelkovy Company (Winter) (SBX28)Each company also had a political komissar, as part of the dual command. The climate of fear caused by the purges meant the military officers often deferred to the komissars, despite the komissars being civilian Communist Party officials with little or no military training. This resulted in some rather unsound military decisions.

The Russian soldier has traditionally embodied stoicism. They were Tough, loyal soldiers able to endure the most extreme hardships of campaign and battle with not a word of complaint. This attitude has continued into the Red Army.

Wave Attacks
The one thing the Soviet Union had in 1939 was a seemingly inexhaustible reserve of manpower. New divisions were being created all the time. The new formations lacked training, but had a willingness to fight and die for the Soviet Worker’s Paradise.

includes five T-38 tanks & one Tank Commander sprue.

The T-38 was a further improvement on the earlier T-37 design which itself was based on the French AMR33 light tank. Cheap the produce, the T-38 was powered by a GAZ (Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod) engine and pushed along in the water via a propeller mounted on the rear of the vehicle. Buoyancy was achieved by the T-38’s large volume hull.

Rising Sun
T-38 Scout Tank Company (SBX27)Due to its low silhouette, superb mobility and amphibious nature, the T-38 was intended for use as a reconnaissance vehicle. However, the lack of a radio severely limited its effectiveness when reconnoitring the battlefield. Worst still, its thin armour and single machine-gun meant the T-38 lacked the protection and firepower necessary to fight its way out of any sticky situations it found itself in.  This was further reinforced during the Winter War as the confined terrain of Finland meant to T-38 was nothing more than a death-trap for its two-man crew.
It fared no better against the Germans during the opening stages of Operation Barbarossa and unlike Soviet vehicles that fell into German hands, the T-38 was not turned against its former owners.  Despite these limitations around 1300 were built before plans were drawn up to replace it with the T-40. This however was short lived as the pressure of wartime production meant only a handful of T-40s were ever built.

Amphibious
Amphibious vehicles are designed to swim, carrying their passengers across rivers or lakes.

Amphibious vehicles treat all Impassable water terrain as Difficult Going instead of Impassable. If Passengers are forced to Dismount for any reason while in Impassable water, they drown and count as Destroyed.
T-38 Scout Tank Company (SBX27)T-38 Scout Tank Company (SBX27)
Limited Vision
In order to pack more into small tanks, some tank designers reduced the crew to a minimum and severely
limited the number of vision devices. Thus, the tanks require the commander to operate as a somewhat vision-impaired gunner as well.

Tanks with Limited Vision add +1 to the score required to hit when shooting any weapon except an AA MG at
targets that are entirely behind a line drawn across the front of the tank’s turret before they rotate their turret to face the target.

Tanks with Limited Vision must rotate their turret to point straight ahead when they move.

Unreliable
Whether poorly designed, unsuitable for the conditions, or requiring more maintenance than current supply considerations will allow, these vehicles have a significant chance of breakdown when pushed too hard.

If an Unreliable vehicle attempts to move At the Double, roll a die. On a roll of 1 the vehicle becomes Bogged Down.

In the early 1950s, the Egyptian Air Force began the transition from prop-driven aircraft to jet fighters. Until this point, the Egyptians had been using surplus World War Two aircraft of either British or Italian origin. While the Egyptians were able to procure Gloster Metreors and De Havilland Vampires from the British, they along with the United States of America they refused to sell Egypt anything more modern.

Check out the MiG-17 in the online store here...
In 1955 Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser intervened and brokered a deal with the Soviet Bloc that saw the Egyptian Air Force supplied with Mikoyan-Gurevich fighters and Ilyushin bombers. By October 1956, the Egypt had 120 MiG-15, 50 Il-28, 87 Meteors and Vampires and a handful of MiG-17s; far superior than anything the Israelis could deploy.

To the US aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom, the MiG-17 proved to be a tricky adversary in the skies over North Vietnam with its high degree of manoeuvrability combined with its powerful armament consisting of one 37mm N-37 cannon along with two 23mm MR-23 cannons. By the 1960s, US aircraft had become reliant on air-to-air missiles; the inclusion of a radar targeted cannon was considered obsolete. A price American airman paid dearly for when encountering the MiG.

Though it was designed as a general purpose fighter, the MiG-17 could also be pressed into service as a fighter-bomber if need be will a payload of up to 500kg of ordinance. This however, was considered inadequate in terms effectiveness when compared to other aircraft of the period. Instead, it was more common for the MiG-17 to carry additional fuel in the form of external tanks.
MiG-17 (ACC03)MiG-17 (ACC03)
The acquisition of the MiG-17 by the Egyptians had a profound impact on the Israeli Air Force. It forced the Israelis to keep pace in terms of aircraft technology leading to their own acquisition of jet fighters such as the French Dassault Ouragan and Mirage IIICJ.

Fast Movers
Fast-moving jet aircraft are difficult to hit with manuallyaimed anti-aircraft guns. It takes an excellent crew and good deal of luck to hit one.

Fast-moving jet aircraft roll a die for each hit from an Anti-aircraft weapon. On a score of 5+, they speed through the danger zone, the shells bursting behind them, and are unharmed. Otherwise they are hit as normal.

Aircraft, such as the MiG 17, that use the tall flight stand require some adjustments to the rules.

Aircraft on tall flight stands must be placed within 6”/15cm of the target rather than the usual 4”/10cm of the target.

In order to maintain equal footing with their Arab neighbours, the Israeli Air Force begun exploring potential upgrades to their jet fighter arsenal. However, it soon became clear that the only nation willing to sell jet fighters to Israel was France and after some alterations to the initial deal, the delivery of twelve Dassault Ouragans begun on 6 October 1955. The initial dozen aircraft were quickly followed by two dozen more in late November after it was announced that Egypt had brokered a deal with Czechoslovakia that included the delivery of one hundred MiG-15 and MiG-17s along with 50 IL-28 bombers.

As tensions in the Mid-East escalated, war seems inevitable. Fearing the worst Israel launched Operation Moked (or Focus), a pre-emptive strike aimed at destroying the Arab Air Forces on the ground in an attempt to gain air supremacy for the land campaign that would surely follow. With virtually all of Israel’s 196 combat aircraft committed to the operation including 51 Ouragans; Operation Moked archived its desired outcome.

With air superiority now established, the Dassault Ouragan were unleashed against the ground forces of the Arab nations for the remained of the Six-Day War and were used to devastating effect against the retreating columns of the Arab nations.

Operation Focus
Operation Moked (Focus) was a pre-emptive air strike by the Kheil HaAvir, the Israeli air force, on the Arab air forces. Combined with their superb new Shahak air-superiority fighters, the surprise strike gave the Israelis total dominance in the air for the rest of the war.

Napalm
The Israelis used napalm against Arab columns and troop concentrations. This jellied petrol was a horrific weapon against infantry and unarmoured vehicles.

Napalm uses a Double-width Template (12”/30cm by 6”/15cm) instead of the usual Template. Place the Template square to the table edges after removing the aircraft, with the narrow end closest to where the aircraft was positioned.

Teams under the Template are hit on a roll of 6. Only Fully-armoured vehicles have any protection against Napalm. If any other type of vehicle or team is hit by Napalm, it is automatically Destroyed unless it is in a Building, even if it is in Bulletproof Cover. A Fully-armoured vehicle hit by Napalm does not take an Armour Save. Instead, on a roll of 5+ the vehicle is Bailed Out. Otherwise, the crew are fine.
